It’s no secret that LeBron James might be making his last playoff run as a Cavalier.
Sure, it’s Oscar season and the NBA campaign is six weeks away from being over, but it’s never too early to start talking about King James’ much-anticipated free-agent decision.
This past week, in a stunt inspired by Oscar-favorite Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, three billboards practically begging LeBron to sign in Philadelphia were put up about seven miles outside of Cleveland.
But are the Sixers a realistic choice?
With their young nucleus, they seem to be. But what about other teams loom large this summer for LeBron’s big decision?
Philadelphia 76ers
Sam Hinkie, the former 76ers GM and mastermind behind “The Process,” doesn’t look so bad anymore.
It took a lot of time and losing, but the Sixers have developed into one of the best young teams in the league. With two transcendent talents in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, LeBron James would make that team the most dangerous in the Eastern Conference.
Signing James, and adding much more shooting, would complete The Process.
Los Angeles Lakers
There were reports last summer that LeBron James to the Lakers was practically a done deal. Now, nothing is ever for sure with LeBron until he signs on the dotted line, but the Lakers absolutely make sense.
While the Lakers have been one of the worst teams in the NBA over the last half decade, the team has a fun, young nucleus that includes rookie Kyle Kuzma, budding star Brandon Ingram and a point guard who doesn’t need the ball and can play solid defense in Lonzo Ball.
But why would LeBron want to join a team that hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2011?
James, 33, has already started to build his empire, that includes his production company that is based in Los Angeles. He also owns more than $50 million in real estate in the L.A. area.
The Lakers will have cap space for LeBron and one other max star, say Paul George? And if LeBron doesn’t want to deal with the LaVar ball headache, the Lakers can always trade Lonzo for a nice haul.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Don’t count out James staying at home with the Cavaliers.
Although James and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert reportedly don’t have a working relationship, LeBron still runs that team and obviously feels comfortable with the franchise.
Before the trade deadline, this looked like a long shot, but Cleveland upgraded in talent around LeBron, surrounding him with more shooting and athleticism.
It isn’t the best option for LeBron, but will he stay with the hometown squad or leave them high and dry again?
We’ll find out in July.
